I was commissioned to do this drawing by a gentleman who stated that the old man in the photograph was his grandfather. He said he remembered as a little boy, after the workday was over, that the migrant workers would pull him around on those big cotton bags.

I saw this guy sitting in a chair, and thought it would make a unique composition. I started in layouts from background and decided on using my studio wall as a back-drop. I’m not sure how or why that wall was built in a basement, but it had all these little drawers in it. I wonder what kind of business it had been used for.

As a little boy, I remember an old store down a block from my parents’ home. My mother would send my sister and me down to get an item or two. Back then, there were so many little “Mom and Pop” shops, almost on every block, operating out of their homes.
