The Critics

As a little boy, I remember an old store down a block from my parents’ home.  My mother would send my sister and me down to get an item or two.  Back then, there were so many little “Mom and Pop” shops, almost on every block, operating out of their homes.

There were little glass cases and gumball machines.  I can still smell the aroma of the old store.  The store was run by two sisters, who often told me, “Don’t put your dirty hands on the glass.”

There were two men talking, so I decided to build my theme around them in front of the store, looking at a little boy, who seemed to be sulking (my sister, Susan, said the boy looked like me – pouting!)  At any rate, the men looked as if they were critiquing the boy, so “The Critics” came to life.

I was in an art show exhibiting this drawing, when I overheard an elderly man say to his wife, “I can almost hear those old guys talking.”
