Harvest

I was commissioned to do this drawing by a gentleman who stated that the old man in the photograph was his grandfather.  He said he remembered as a little boy, after the workday was over, that the migrant workers would pull him around on those big cotton bags. 

I had visited the ‘old’ south back in the late 50’s /early 60’s, and remembered thinking how poor these folks were.  So many shacks didn’t even have blinds or curtains.  It made me appreciate what I had. 

Many years later, after I sold the piece, I met a man who had seen this drawing.  He said, “Little did I think that I would be in Indiana, and see a piece of my old homeland.”  He, too, had been raised during that time period in the south.  I realized, then, how powerful and timeless a painting or drawing can be.
